GIFT GIFT (Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer) is a procedure where the retrieved eggs and sperm are injected directly into the woman's fallopian tubes where fertilization finally takes place (see image). The disadvantage of this method is that since fertilization must occur naturally inside the fallopian tubes there is the chance that fertilization may not occur. Recently, to improve to like lihood of successfull fertilization GIFT is commonly performed following ICSI. GIFT can be performed on the same day as egg and sperm retrieval.

ZIFT (Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer) is different from this procedure in that after the sperm and eggs are collected, the eggs are fertilized following ICSI and then the newly fertilized eggs (zygotes) are transferred to the fallopian tubes. This procedure can be carried out in one day.
EIFT (Embryo Intrafallopian Transfer) is exactly the same as ZIFT except that the newly fertilized eggs are left to develop in the culture outside the body to the stage of an embryo (4-6 cells, 2 days after oocyte collection) before they are transferred to the fallopian tube.

These treatments may be recommended in cases where a female is older or IVF/ET has failed more than 5 times.
